Father's Day is Around The Corner
Father's Day is Around The Corner

Do you have any special plans? This is a paticuliar hard day for me since my dad has passed. If you want more details go to this post. Since we will be going out of town on Thursday, I thought I'd do a quick Father's Day post today to see what everyone had planned. So, here is the history of Father's Day:

Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "Father's Day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards.

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father's Day.

*hugs* I screwed up. We agreed weeks ago to do dinner out Friday night for my dad. I forgot & said I could work for somoene at my part time job. Now I'm in trouble with the family.

On a lighter note, I caught up on The Hills yesterday when our Dish Network guy left. Yay!

*hugs* Sonya, it must be a difficult day for you....

Thank you very much for the information! I had no idea how it was started. I may have to start calling you Ms. Sonya grinzzz since you are always teaching me something!

Hey Sonya,

Here's my Father's Day gift to you in memory of your Father. It features Star Search finalist Tatiana McConnico.

Sonya I'm so sorry about your Father--I know it's hard! Every year I can hardly go through May because my Mom is gone and I lost her around that time.
Now...my Dad is a totally different thing, I don't know if I will be doing anything for him for Father's day--he's dating a girl younger than I!!! Sooooo wrong! :(

I lost my dad when I was 6. But I have the hubby to pamper.

My father and mother are going out of town on a vacation. My sister and I did get him stuff though to take with! :)

I wrote about my bond with my father today as well
